Deborah La Scola, MD
recently joined St. John’s Clinic-Urology. As the
area’s first female urologist, she is excited about treating the urology
needs of both men and women here in the Ozarks.
Dr. La Scola treats a
wide variety of urinary system problems in patients of all ages. She
treats many types of cancers including kidney, prostate, bladder and
testicular. In addition, she also treats kidney stones, erectile
dysfunction, and voiding dysfunction in both men and women.
She specializes in
minimally invasive treatment of kidney and prostate cancer. “Urology is
rewarding because the cancers we see are very treatable and most of the
patients can survive their disease” says Dr. La Scola.
Currently, Dr. La
Scola is joining fellow urologists Drs. Eric Guilliams and Mark
Walterskirchen to perform minimally invasive prostatectomies using the
da Vinci robot.
“Performing
prostatectomies robotically allows for smaller incisions, lessens the
recovery time and adds a greater precision for the surgeon”, she says,
“overall, it is much easier on the patient in regards to post operative
discomfort and ability to return to baseline activities more quickly”.
She received her
medical education from the University of South Alabama College of
Medicine and completed her surgical internship and urologic residency
training at Saint Louis University Hospital where she served as chief
resident in urology for two years. She is a member of the American
Urology Association, the Society for Women in Urology, the
Endourological Society, the Sexual Medicine Society and the American
Association of Clinical Urologists.
